Hello June! What’s Up?

hello-june-we-heart-it-5

June is a busy month with so much to be excited about!  We start the month with a bang, on June 4th, by going to see the Canadian band Barenaked Ladies at Starlight Theater.  It’s a family event for us:  Carolyn’s whole family are going along with Kristi and her youngest daughter Mary Alice.  It’s the kids first concert and they are all very excited.  If you have a chance to grab last minute tickets we highly recommend it.  This band is very fun, creative and happy.

The following Friday, June 10th, Kristi & I will attend Art That Blows, an event that benefits Band of Angels KC.   Local artists have repurposed and donated non-functional musical instruments into pieces of art for this event. Guests may bid on the pieces during the silent auction starting at 5pm and then enjoy a live rooftop performance by DJ Ashton Martin while overlooking the breathtaking Kansas City skyline. Tickets are still available.  You can learn more and purchase tickets by clicking here.  Kristi and I have donated a whopping 40 pieces of jewelry made from retired instruments to this event.  We are excited to meet the other artists who will be in attendance as well as Band of Angels supporters.

On Friday June 17th and Saturday June 18th (from 5pm-11pm each evening) Kristi and I will be hanging out in our booth (with all of our Hang Ups) at SoJo Summerfest (formerly Jazz in the Woods).  Check out this fun festival for local food & brews, local music and to meet local artisans to support local charities.  Does it get any better than that?  This event takes place at Corporate Woods, Overland Park KS and is a free event so come by and see us!

Last but definitely not least, Sunday June 19th is Father’s Day!  Like so many other people out there we are desperately trying to think of unique and fun gifts for our Dad’s and our husbands.  If your husband or father is a musician we have plenty of options for you on our website.   For example, this money clip features a key from a retired trumpet.  A generous portion of the proceeds go directly to Band of Angels KC and will help to send kids to music camp.  There’s nothing better than a gift that gives back.

That’s what we have going on this June.  We’d love it if you could come out and say hi to us at any of these events.  We wish you all a safe and happy June!

How Hang Ups Celebrates Earth Day

images

About four years ago we signed up for an eco-art fair called Zeleny, organized by repurposing Queen, Alexis from X37 Adventures.  Zeleny  (the Czech word for Green) focused on celebrating the repurposing movement and giving back to the community.  That is when we were bit by the repurposing bug.  We love the personality that antique, vintage and “found” items have.  Currently almost 100% of our creations feature repurposed items that may have ended up in a landfill, such as silverware, rusted out typewriters, leather belts & purses, keys, key holes and broken down instruments.  That answers the question of how we celebrate Earth Day – every day is Earth Day at Hang Ups!

This is a small sampling of our jewelry made from repurposed materials.  You can find any of these pieces of jewelry on our website by clicking on the photo of the piece that you like.   Giving back to the community that we live in is very important to us – most of the items on site give back to Literacy Kansas City or Band of Angels KC.

Do you love stuff made from repurposed materials?  If so, we’d love to see your favorite item. Please share in the comments section!  Happy Earth Day!

A Behind the Scenes Peek at the Making of Drum Cymbal Earrings

Kristi & I rarely make jewelry for ourselves.  I guess it’s a hazard of any “maker” occupation.  We are so busy creating for others that we forget to make ourselves new jewelry.   I made Kristi drum cymbal earrings a few weeks ago and admire how pretty they look every time she wears them.  Today I decided that I need a pair of earrings for myself.

Welcome to my workshop.  It’s not fancy but it’s bright and functional.  It’s my favorite place to spend my days.

HangUpsWorkshop2

After some experimentation I’ve found that my Dremel is the best tool to use when cutting the cymbal.

HangUpsWorkshop3

Sanding pieces of metal this small is tricky. I can’t wear gloves because the piece of cymbal is too small to grip. It gets VERY hot so patience is required.

HangUpsWorkshop4

I love my drill press so much. For projects like this it is so fast & easy!

HangUpsWorkshop5

I decided against beads so I just needed to add the ear wires.

Ta-da!

What do you think?

What do you think?

Stay tuned – next week we’ll give you a behind the scenes look at Kristi’s workspace.

Have a great week friends!

What Pulls at our Heartstrings here at Hang Ups in KC

Instead of showing you our love-themed jewelry for Valentines Day we decided to tell you about a cause that we love instead.

If you follow us on social media you hear us talk a lot about Band of Angels a lot.  Who are Band of Angels?  Band of Angels is an amazing Kansas City based non-profit organization who collects used music instruments from those who no longer want them and helps make them available to kids in need who couldn’t otherwise afford them. Donated instruments are refurbished and restored to playing condition before given to a student. Cash donations are accepted also, which are used to purchase instruments. With these instruments, students can join their school’s band and orchestra programs. Also, funds raised help send students to summer music camp with full scholarships.  To learn more or donate please visit them at www.bandofangelskc.org.   Hang Ups in KC partnered with Band of Angels about two years ago.  We take instruments that cannot be repaired and make jewelry from them.  A generous portion of the sale of every piece of our musical instrument jewelry goes directly back to Band of Angels.  If you would like to check out our Band of Angels Collection on our website click here.  Here’s a small sampling of what we can do with retired instruments:

Band of Angels has two major fundraisers a year:  Heartstrings in February and Art that Blows in June.  Last Saturday was the most successful Heartstrings Gala yet.  There were approximately 400 attendees who showed up to support this amazing cause.  George Shelby was the special guest performer.  During his 35 year career he has played saxophone with Beyoncé, Michael McDonald, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Toto, Bruce Springsteen, Hilary Duff, Bono, Sting, Elton John, Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, Johnny Mathis, and many others.  Joining him on stage were Band of Angels beneficiaries and wonderful spokespeople Morgan & Connor Cravens.

Hang Ups in KC at the Kansas City Symphony

KauffmanB

One of our goals for this fall was to introduce our Band of Angels Collection to symphony gift shops across the country.  Our Band of Angels Collection features handmade jewelry created from retired musical instruments.  A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this jewelry collection goes to Band of Angels KC, a non-profit dedicated to collecting and distributing instruments to kids in need.

We are very proud to announce that select pieces from our Band of Angels Collection can now be purchased at the Kansas City Symphony Alliance Shop!  This shop is located in the Brandmeyer Grand Hall of the award winning Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

These are a few of the designs that can be found at the Kansas City Symphony Alliance Shop:

We are passionate about our work with Band of Angels KC and have great plans for the future of this collection.   We have a favor to ask of you.  If you have any contacts at Symphonies, Operas and Performing Arts Centers across the United States, Canada or anywhere else in the world please share our work with them.  Word of mouth is the most powerful marketing tool.

Thank you for accompanying us on this wonderful journey!

Teacher Gifts That Give Back

It’s that time of year when we are frantically trying to help our kids wrap up a school year and want to thank their teachers with a gift.  Our children’s teachers receive jewelry.  Surprised?  Probably not.  Here are a few things that we cooked up this year.

KaraJackson2

My sons speech pathologist will receive this tongue-in-cheek nod to her profession.  I stamped “I have ways of making people talk” onto a strip of aluminum and then mounted it onto a nice sturdy piece of brown leather.  The beauty of this style of bracelet is that I can be creative and stamp pretty much anything I’d like.  I hope she loves it.

We have several great options for teachers gifts in our Literacy Kansas City Collection.  We can even custom create jewelry to your specifications.  A portion of every purchase goes directly back to Literacy Kansas City, an amazing organization that provides free individualized tutoring services to adults in the Kansas City area.  Teachers love literacy!

Tuwei

My older son’s orchestra teacher will receive this violin tuning peg necklace.  She introduced him to the viola and has inspired and encouraged him for two years.  He moves on to a different orchestra teacher next year so I wanted to make sure to thank her with a special gift.

We have so many great gifts for music teachers in our Band of Angels Collection.  Teachers also love that a portion of the proceeds from their gift goes to such a great organization.  Band of Angels lends instruments to children in need so they can join band and orchestra programs.  They also offer scholarships to the students in the program so that they can further their music education.  Every purchase provides the gift of music education to kids in need.

Now that the teachers gifts have been taken care of we look forward to summery fun with our kids and wish you a wonderful summer as well!

Happy Earth Week from Hang Ups in KC

Earth Day is celebrated around the world every year on April 22nd.  We celebrate the Earth year-around by doing what we can for the environment such as recycling, buying energy efficient appliances, teaching our kids about the environment and repurposing not only at home but in our business.  Did you know that approximately 80% of our handmade jewelry is created from repurposed items?  In case you did not know this we thought we’d share some photos to show you what we can do with vintage and repurposed treasures.

We can all make a difference!  We’d love to hear how you celebrate Earth, whether it’s on Earth Day or any other day.
