Hang Ups in KC at the Kansas City Symphony

KauffmanB

One of our goals for this fall was to introduce our Band of Angels Collection to symphony gift shops across the country.  Our Band of Angels Collection features handmade jewelry created from retired musical instruments.  A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this jewelry collection goes to Band of Angels KC, a non-profit dedicated to collecting and distributing instruments to kids in need.

We are very proud to announce that select pieces from our Band of Angels Collection can now be purchased at the Kansas City Symphony Alliance Shop!  This shop is located in the Brandmeyer Grand Hall of the award winning Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

These are a few of the designs that can be found at the Kansas City Symphony Alliance Shop:

We are passionate about our work with Band of Angels KC and have great plans for the future of this collection.   We have a favor to ask of you.  If you have any contacts at Symphonies, Operas and Performing Arts Centers across the United States, Canada or anywhere else in the world please share our work with them.  Word of mouth is the most powerful marketing tool.

Thank you for accompanying us on this wonderful journey!

Where You Can Find Hang Ups in KC This Fall

Fall is fast approaching.  The kids are back to school, vacations have been taken and Hang Ups is in full swing again.  This fall will be a little different from past years’ for us.  This year we are only doing one show where, in the past, we’ve done several.  We have stepped back from the fall show circuit to celebrate some big birthdays (that happened to fall on show weekends) with our families.

If you’d like to come out and see our Hang Ups in person we’d love to see you at the Chick Events Handmade & Vintage Show in Leawood, Kansas.  Click here for directions.

This show takes place Saturday September 12 (10am-8pm) & Sunday September 13th (11am-4pm).  Tickets are $5 per day or $8 for a weekend pass.  Children 12 and under are free.

Some of our favorite makers will be there:

If you can’t make it out to the Chick Events Handmade & Vintage Show you can always find us online.  We currently have almost 200 of our creations available on our website.  We have many new items that have not made it to our website yet.  We will be working hard to add these new designs in the weeks following the Chick Events Handmade & Vintage Show.

Happy almost-fall friends!

Teacher Gifts That Give Back

It’s that time of year when we are frantically trying to help our kids wrap up a school year and want to thank their teachers with a gift.  Our children’s teachers receive jewelry.  Surprised?  Probably not.  Here are a few things that we cooked up this year.

KaraJackson2

My sons speech pathologist will receive this tongue-in-cheek nod to her profession.  I stamped “I have ways of making people talk” onto a strip of aluminum and then mounted it onto a nice sturdy piece of brown leather.  The beauty of this style of bracelet is that I can be creative and stamp pretty much anything I’d like.  I hope she loves it.

We have several great options for teachers gifts in our Literacy Kansas City Collection.  We can even custom create jewelry to your specifications.  A portion of every purchase goes directly back to Literacy Kansas City, an amazing organization that provides free individualized tutoring services to adults in the Kansas City area.  Teachers love literacy!

Tuwei

My older son’s orchestra teacher will receive this violin tuning peg necklace.  She introduced him to the viola and has inspired and encouraged him for two years.  He moves on to a different orchestra teacher next year so I wanted to make sure to thank her with a special gift.

We have so many great gifts for music teachers in our Band of Angels Collection.  Teachers also love that a portion of the proceeds from their gift goes to such a great organization.  Band of Angels lends instruments to children in need so they can join band and orchestra programs.  They also offer scholarships to the students in the program so that they can further their music education.  Every purchase provides the gift of music education to kids in need.

Now that the teachers gifts have been taken care of we look forward to summery fun with our kids and wish you a wonderful summer as well!

Kristi’s Individual Sized Breakfast Quiches

breakfast_quiches

This week Kristi featured her breakfast quiches as part of our Year of Making (#yearofmaking) challenge.  We had a lot of questions & comments on social media so we thought we’d feature her recipe so you can make them too.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bag thawed frozen hashbrowns (20-24 oz)
  • 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 12 eggs
  • 2/3 cup milk (or water)
  • 1/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese (plus extra to sprinkle onto the top).  You can use your favorite cheese
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh spinach
  • 1/2 cup chopped cherry tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh mushrooms
  • salt & pepper

Instructions:

  1. Take a bag (24oz) of thawed hash browns, mix in 2 tsp salt, 1 tsp fresh ground black pepper, 2 tbs oil and about 1⁄3 c shredded cheddar cheese. Put then in a well greased muffin tin and make a well in the center. I ended up making 2 muffin tins (24 cups).
  2. Bake at 425°F for 15-18 minutes, cover with foil if the edges appear to be getting too brown.
  3. Lower the oven to 350°F.
  4. In a medium bowl beat eggs, then beat in milk (or water). Add chopped spinach to mixture and mix well.
  5. Pour this mixture into the hashbrown “nests” leaving some space for add-ins. Then add tomatoes and mushrooms (or whatever you want to add) into each cup. try not to overflow egg mixture out of the muffin tin.
  6. Top with shredded cheese.
  7. Bake for about 13-16 minutes.
  8. Gentle slide a knife along the edges, and gently pull up with a fork.

Put any leftovers in the freezer to be reheated for quick and nutritious breakfasts.  Enjoy!

Happy Earth Week from Hang Ups in KC

Earth Day is celebrated around the world every year on April 22nd.  We celebrate the Earth year-around by doing what we can for the environment such as recycling, buying energy efficient appliances, teaching our kids about the environment and repurposing not only at home but in our business.  Did you know that approximately 80% of our handmade jewelry is created from repurposed items?  In case you did not know this we thought we’d share some photos to show you what we can do with vintage and repurposed treasures.

If you come out to any of these shows please drop by to say HI!

This past weekend we officially kicked off festival season with Festival of the Little Hills in beautiful historic St. Charles, Missouri.  This festival is huge – with over 300 vendors lining the gorgeous Main Street and Frontier Park, on the shores of the Missouri River.   We thought it would be fun to share our photos with you.

Pre-Show Street View  Street View

On the left, Main Street prior to opening.  On the right, our sidewalk view from the back of our booth.  Check out those gorgeous historic buildings and the cobblestone street.

Weather  Crowds

How was the weather?  Well it started raining on Friday at about 5pm and it stopped on Sunday around 3pm.  That didn’t stop the shoppers who wait for this festival all year, though.  Although they may not have reached their expected 200,000 shoppers there were A LOT of people there!

Booth Booth RHS

Here are a couple of shots of our booth.  We had some fun collecting and refinishing props such as tables, a handmade metal sign (top of the back of the booth) and new stands.  We also welcomed a new member of our team – Grace! …that’s her in the front of the booth with the jewelry hanging from her.

Grace Night Booth

This is a better photo of Grace.  We love how vintage-looking she is and the fact that she didn’t complain about the rain at all.  Another issue that we had to deal with this year was lighting since this festival goes to 10pm every night.  With the help of Kristi’s husband Matt and our friends at Handmade in KC (www.handmadeinkc.com) we found some lighting solutions that were very effective as well as pretty.

Despite the weather we had a blast and fell in love with this historic town on the edge of St. Louis.  Next up – Hillsboro Arts & Craft Fair. Hopefully we’ll see you there!

Thank you all for letting us share our adventure with you!

The winner of our Summer Fun Contest is…..

Drum-roll please……NICOLE WALL of www.nicherndesigns.com.  Congratulations Nicole!!!  Nicole liked, followed and shared her way to winning this beautiful book:
