Jewelry from our Band of Angels Collection also makes great gifts for students and teachers.  A portion of the proceeds from the sale of every item in this collection goes directly back to Band of Angels KC.  Band of Angels is a non-profit organization who collect, repair and distribute instruments to kids in need.  They also send many kids to music camp every summer.  We have a lot of fun making jewelry from the instruments that cannot be repaired.  Here’s a small sampling of what is available on our website.

How Hang Ups Celebrates Earth Day

images

About four years ago we signed up for an eco-art fair called Zeleny, organized by repurposing Queen, Alexis from X37 Adventures.  Zeleny  (the Czech word for Green) focused on celebrating the repurposing movement and giving back to the community.  That is when we were bit by the repurposing bug.  We love the personality that antique, vintage and “found” items have.  Currently almost 100% of our creations feature repurposed items that may have ended up in a landfill, such as silverware, rusted out typewriters, leather belts & purses, keys, key holes and broken down instruments.  That answers the question of how we celebrate Earth Day – every day is Earth Day at Hang Ups!

This is a small sampling of our jewelry made from repurposed materials.  You can find any of these pieces of jewelry on our website by clicking on the photo of the piece that you like.   Giving back to the community that we live in is very important to us – most of the items on site give back to Literacy Kansas City or Band of Angels KC.

Do you love stuff made from repurposed materials?  If so, we’d love to see your favorite item. Please share in the comments section!  Happy Earth Day!

What’s Happening with Hang Ups in KC in the New Year

Happy New Year!  We hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season filled with great food, family and fun.

On January 11th, we started the New Year out on the right foot by participating in Books, Brains & Boulevard – a very fun trivia night fundraiser for our friends at Literacy Kansas City.  This event takes place annually at beautiful Boulevard Brewing Company in Kansas City.   Fun was had and money was raised for a very worthy local non-profit who have such a positive impact on our city. Books, Brains & Blvd

As the busy Christmas season slides into January we have a lot of fun discussing where we want to take our business in the new year.  It’s a time for fresh ideas and dreaming big.  Every spring we attend a conference for makers who are small business owners.  For the past three years, in March, we’ve had a blast at Craftcation in Ventura, California.  Next month we are doing something a little different and attending Midwest CraftCon in Columbus, Ohio.  We look forward to seeing two of our very favorite speakers:  author and creative business guru Abby Glassenberg and artist extraoridinaire Lisa Congdon from Lisa Congdon Art + Illustration.

Thanks for following us on this crazy fun ride.  We are so grateful for each and every one of you and for your support.  Stay tuned for exciting developments for 2016!

Teacher Gifts That Give Back

It’s that time of year when we are frantically trying to help our kids wrap up a school year and want to thank their teachers with a gift.  Our children’s teachers receive jewelry.  Surprised?  Probably not.  Here are a few things that we cooked up this year.

KaraJackson2

My sons speech pathologist will receive this tongue-in-cheek nod to her profession.  I stamped “I have ways of making people talk” onto a strip of aluminum and then mounted it onto a nice sturdy piece of brown leather.  The beauty of this style of bracelet is that I can be creative and stamp pretty much anything I’d like.  I hope she loves it.

We have several great options for teachers gifts in our Literacy Kansas City Collection.  We can even custom create jewelry to your specifications.  A portion of every purchase goes directly back to Literacy Kansas City, an amazing organization that provides free individualized tutoring services to adults in the Kansas City area.  Teachers love literacy!

Tuwei

My older son’s orchestra teacher will receive this violin tuning peg necklace.  She introduced him to the viola and has inspired and encouraged him for two years.  He moves on to a different orchestra teacher next year so I wanted to make sure to thank her with a special gift.

We have so many great gifts for music teachers in our Band of Angels Collection.  Teachers also love that a portion of the proceeds from their gift goes to such a great organization.  Band of Angels lends instruments to children in need so they can join band and orchestra programs.  They also offer scholarships to the students in the program so that they can further their music education.  Every purchase provides the gift of music education to kids in need.

Now that the teachers gifts have been taken care of we look forward to summery fun with our kids and wish you a wonderful summer as well!

Happy Earth Week from Hang Ups in KC

Earth Day is celebrated around the world every year on April 22nd.  We celebrate the Earth year-around by doing what we can for the environment such as recycling, buying energy efficient appliances, teaching our kids about the environment and repurposing not only at home but in our business.  Did you know that approximately 80% of our handmade jewelry is created from repurposed items?  In case you did not know this we thought we’d share some photos to show you what we can do with vintage and repurposed treasures.

Hang Ups in KC Partners With Literacy Kansas City

Literacy Sign Blog

Kristi and I are thrilled to announce our brand-new partnership with Literacy Kansas City.

I’ve had a few people ask me what Literacy Kansas City is and it occurred to me that not everyone is aware of the desperate need for literacy programs in all geographical areas.   For example, approximately 225,000 adults in the Kansas City area function at the lowest literacy level.  Literacy Kansas City’s goal is to help raise awareness of our community’s significant literacy needs and provide free one-to-one and small group tutoring programs.  Their volunteers give the gift of self-esteem, new opportunities, and capabilities that literacy brings to virtually every aspect of a student’s life.

Why are Kristi and I so passionate about literacy?  Because we LOVE to read and believe that everyone should have the opportunity to love it as much as we do.  Kristi was a reading volunteer at her kids school in Liberty for years.  She also loves that her children have started to share that passion for reading, they will even recommend books for her to read. I have an English Literature Degree and a background volunteering with the Barrie Literacy Council in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.  I’m also the daughter of a school librarian and I am a school library volunteer.  I LOVE (it’s that big and bold love again) working in the school library.  Who knew?  I guess I really am my mother’s daughter.

So where does Hang Ups in KC come in?  We are in the process of creating a brand new line of jewelry dedicated to the joy of reading in the form of inspirational words and quotes.  The jewelry will be in our usual eclectic style using mostly vintage and repurposed items.  A portion of every sale in this line will be dedicated to Literacy Kansas City.  Our brand new Literacy Kansas City line of jewelry can be found on our website by clicking on the jewelry tab.  To make it super easy, here’s the link:  http://www.hangupsinkc.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=78_80.  Here is a sneak peak of what we have available online right now.

We would truly appreciate it if you could help us to spread the word about our new jewelry line in support of Literacy Kansas City.  This is the link to our website’s home page  (www.hangupsinkc.com).  We would also love to hear what you think we should create – so many of our friends and followers have brilliantly creative minds.

For more information about Literacy Kansas City and their initiatives please visit www.literacykc.org.

I guarantee that your city has the same needs as Kansas City.  Go ahead and google literacy programs in your area.  They are looking for all kinds of support like tutor volunteers, book donations, sponsors, etc.  If you are as passionate about literacy as we are maybe there is something you can do to make a difference.
